Cobra Verde
Easy Listening
Rating: 4 bunnies

Remember when it was OK to sing along to Boston? When the Stones were worth listening to? When David Bowie rocked out? When the Kinks were cool? If you've ever longed for those days, or wished you were old enough to have enjoyed them, pick up Cobra Verde's latest, Easy Listening. Rather than simply mimic all those old bar bands and glam acts like so many young whippersnappers are doing these days (see the Hives, the Vines, et al.), Cobra Verde brings maturity and chops to music its members are old enough to have grown up listening to. In an atmosphere of baby indie rockers that has had all the feeling hyped, styled and analyzed out of them, it's surprising and somehow reassuring to hear a voice as adult-sounding as John Petkovic's in front of a band that remembers how to entertain as well as kick out the motherfucking jams. There's some kind of vampire theme running through a lot of the lyrics on Easy Listening that we don't really get -- but never mind that. This record has loud guitars, actual verses and rock-solid choruses. Remember that stuff? Wasn't it great? Isn't it still?
